Abbey Community College opened its doors on September 1st 2000 . The school is an amalgamation of two outstanding educational institutes, Sacred Heart of Mary Secondary School, Ferrybank, and Slieverue Vocational School . These two institutes have served the South Kilkenny area since 1879 and 1953 respectively. Abbey Community College has been established under the trusteeship of the Sacred Heart of Mary Sisters and the Co. Kilkenny V.E.C. It's educational philosophy is based on a commitment to life long learning in a Christian community.

At present a new building is being constructed on the grounds of the former convent Secondary School in Ferrybank. On completion in November 2001, this 4200 square metre, state of the art building will cater for 600 students.

Students of Abbey Community College can access a rapidly expanding curriculum from which they may choose a wide variety of subjects, both practical and academic. Equality of educational opportunities and access to all subjects are central to the educational philosophy. The college aspires to serve it's community by creating an environment in which all are enabled to grow.
